What is Rolfing?
Rolfing is a specialized type of manual therapy or bodywork that focuses on the form as well as the function of the body. This type of body-focused therapy excels at releasing patterns of tension and creating easeful movements in the body. In doing so this brings a higher functioning to the body and pain-relief that lasts. People seek Rolfing as a way to reduce pain and chronic stress. This pain and chronic stress often resulting from physical and emotional traumas or just the daily strain of living in a human body.
Rolfing is a process of release, re-alignment and re-integration of the body and nervous system.
Our Bodies
Our bodies encase and reflect our life experiences by absorbing them in our connective tissue. Trauma that occurred in our birth, childhood injuries, car accidents, surgeries and emotional scarring can all live with us in our connective tissue. This tissue can become shortened and stuck causing stiffness and pain. The body will then adapt to these shortenings in other places, leading to problems in posture and movement. Our bones and our posture are the way they are because the fascia holds and shapes them.
How Rolfing Works
A variety of highly skilled touch ranging from deep and firm to subtle and gentle. Rolfing works on lengthening the connective tissues of the muscles and calming the nervous system. Rolfing aims to unwind and release held patterns and injuries.
Research has demonstrated that Rolfing results in more efficient muscle use, allows the body to conserve energy and create more optimal movement patterns. Rolfing has also been shown to significantly reduce chronic stress, reduce spinal curvature, and enhance neurological functioning. Rolfing is used by many professional athletes, dancers and entertainers to improve performance.
